In Dave’s own words - It’s deep, and from the heart!
This is my personal dedication to say thank you to all my wonderful family and friends who have made such a contribution and supported ’David Cakes of Distinction’ and a special thank you to the clients who believe in my product and have given me the reason to never give up on this dream.
To my wonderful Mum and Dad, Hilda and Roy, who both stood by me and supported my vision to have my own cake shop from the age of 7.
At 15, I left school with two ‘O’ levels Art and Domestic Science - I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Hart and Miss Edwards (Domestic Science) also Mrs Dempster (Art) for all your encouragement.
In 1979, I enrolled at Colquitt Street Nautical and Catering College where I studied ‘Baking and Food Technology’ and ‘Cake Decoration‘. I gained three ‘City and Guilds’.
Thank you to Brian Colley, Graeme Knowles and Helmut Prof for encouraging me to work hard and achieve my goal.
After working at many bakeries and travelling abroad, I knew what I wanted to do with my life and it was time to go for it!
In 1983, I was 19. With the help of a £1000 grant funded by The Merseyside Enterprise Allowance Scheme, I started ’David Cakes of Distinction’ from a converted spare bedroom. Mum took on the task of marketing me and my creative work, Dad took care of the accounts. As a team we worked very hard and with my parents support we achieved more than I could have ever dreamed of.
Tragically in 2002, Dad died of Cancer. It shattered my world and I still miss him dearly. He made me promise never to give up on my dreams, work hard and cherish every moment.
I will never give up Dad and I will love you and mum always xx
To my brother, John, love you bro x
‘David Cakes of Distinction’ has sponsored MacMillan Cancer Support for 25 years. Each Christmas we give a cake to the local Christmas fund raiser organised by Cath Cowan and the team from Macmillan Cancer Support Crosby.
I would personally like to thank Sefton MacMillan Nurses who looked after my dad They are wonderful people, blessed with a such unconditional dedication and compassion.
To Cath, thank you for being a great friend to our family and for your support during the difficult time. I know my mum thinks the world of you too.
MacMillan Cancer Support is voluntarily based and needs funds to keep it operational.
’David Cakes’ will continue to make every effort to help raise more money for this wonderful charity in memory of my Dad and all who are living with cancer.
Special thanks also to Claire Lomax, Tony Rubio and Billy Kinsley from ‘The Liverpool Express’ for all their free time and effort into helping to produce my charity song ‘Forever Free’ dedicated to my Dad. The proceeds of the CD still continue to go to MacMillan Cancer Support.
We also recently donated a cake for the yearly ‘Coffee Morning’ fund raiser. The Litherland fund-raiser raffle, organised by Ed’s sister in law Carol Windsor and friends raised £240 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Dad ’s death was a turning point in my life. Mum retired and handed the reigns of the business to myself and my wonderful partner of 13 years in business and life, Edward Windsor.
Ed, as he likes to be called, joined the company in 1994. A butcher by trade, Ed had just returned from working for 2 years on the kibbutz Givat Haim in Israel.
Ed started as a van driver, but I knew he had talent waiting to shine.
His passion for interior design came into its own in an edible way and through patience, hard work and total commitment he learnt the skills of cake decorating.
Ed unleashes his passion for creativity with every order he produces and loves his job.
I’m so proud of you Ed and thank you!
We have had many staff working for us over the years. Some left to start a family, others to pursue their own business dreams. I would like to take this opportunity to say ’thank you’ for all your support through the years.
2006 was a turning point for ‘David Cakes’, when I started designing and creating this website. The internet is the future of business and to be able to share my business with you today is such a fortunate thing for me. The web has opened the doors of our business to the world, receiving national and international orders - Wow! The internet is a fantastic creation.
When your friends make you feel like they are your family, you are very blessed…
So to my dearest colleagues…
Celia Shaw, in charge of office accounts. Celia has known me from birth. Her family and mine have been friends for over 45 years.
She has been involved with ’David Cakes’ from the beginning.
Thank you ‘Aunty Cele’ and your family for all your continued support.
I must mention my ‘Aunty Irene’ who died this year along with her sons wife in a tragic accident. Irene Trevorrow, a creative genius and when I was a child she was such an inspiration to me. Irene and husband Geoff, Celia and her husband Ronnie along with Dave Garry, supported by his wife Inga, all worked along side myself, mum and dad to convert and build ’David Cakes’ showroom between us in 1983.
A special thank you to Marie Catteral, John Dickson, Lesley Day and all of Mum and Dad’s friends for all your unconditional support.
Thank you to you all.
In 2006, Chris Horrocks joined ‘David Cakes’.
A great friend for many years and a builder by trade, this ambitious 28 year old’s dedication and creativity shone during his stay at ‘David Cakes‘.
Throughout all the years we have known each other, Chris has always said that from an early age he had felt that ‘inner calling’ to ultimately work for himself and to have his own building contracting company, which he left to pursue in 2007.
Like myself, Chris has recently been affected by the issues of cancer within his family. We are presently working together on fund raising ideas that will hopefully raise a lot of money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Thank you mate.
Hello to Paula and the kiddies.
In 2007, a young lady walked into our showroom with such a joyous smile enquiring about a vacancy advertised in our shop window…
Gosia Dusko from Bielsko-Biala, Poland joined ’David Cakes’ initially as a cleaner.
When she told us she had worked in a bakery in her home town, Ed and I knew we had to find out what she was capable of.
Such dedication and hard work shines through in this beautiful person and great friend. Gosia now works along side myself and Ed, preparing and producing cakes. We are a great team.
Thank you Gosia, Hello to Grzegorz and your family in Poland.
“Pozdrawiamy naszych polskich przyjaciol Gosia i Grzegorz"
Like ‘shining stars’ is how I like to describe Laura and Thomas Windsor, Ed’s niece and nephew are great ’kids’ who have big dreams for success.
Thomas helped out many Saturday’s cleaning, and has now joined the RAF.
‘I know he will make us all so proud.’
In 2007 Laura joined ’David Cakes’ for 3 months while waiting to go to university to study to become a teacher. This young lady basically turned my work desk around!
She taught me how to multiple e-mail and database and compiled our wedding booklet which we present with all our wedding cake enquiries. So meticulous, so tidy and so much fun, Laura taught me that office organisation is an essential for typically untidy creative person like myself!
I vowed to Laura, I would keep her legacy alive and keep the office organised!
Laura - its still tidy! Ha Ha!!
Thank you Laura, and good luck to you and Tom in your future careers.
I cannot forget all of Ed’s family who have been so wonderful to me all these years. Thank you.
Sue Hamill-Hope worked at ’David Cakes’ as a shop manageress back in 1986.
She subsequently followed her dream, travelling to the Indian sub-continent and the Far East, studying natural healing techniques.
Sue returned to England and now runs her own business within Crosby Physiotherapy, where she is specialising in reflexology and body massage techniques that promote well being.
Thank you Sue for all you have done for me and being a great friend

Marketing was a natural gift my Mum embraced so easily for ‘David Cakes’, winning the company many awards and earning international recognition. When she retired, her legacy was a tough act to follow.
Julie Maddocks and husband Kev, directors of their own printing company ‘Sprinter Printer’ opened my mind in a wonderful new direction, demonstrating the power of imagery in business and internet marketing. Together with my digital artwork and vision, along with Julie and Kev’s advertising skills, ’David Cakes’ company profile has been raised to a new level.
Thank you Jules and Kev

With me personally wanting to achieve so much, my mind needs to stay focused both creatively and productively.
For me it’s not just about earning money. I love this business - it‘s the main part of my life, always has been and always will be.
Together with having to deal with Dad’s death and supporting my Mum through those difficult times and managing the entire business when she retired, finally caught up with me late 2006.
I knew something had to change to avoid total burn out.
Then I met Ian Webster who runs his own company called ’Achieve’.
Based in Rodney Street , Liverpool, Merseyside, Ian is highly trained and experienced in ‘high performance business and lifestyle coaching’ with many degrees and honours to his name.
‘Mr Gu’ as I affectionately call him, is a gentle, strong and wise man, who is my personal coach, guide and inspiration.
Ian has taught me new values and an appreciation of life.
As the song goes.. ‘I can, because I believe I can, I will… !”
Thank you Ian for your continued support.
And I have to say it- “Praise da Gu !” Ha Ha
Hello to Alexis and your family
